Merry Merry, Happy Happy

New rule

I am self imposing a new rule. No more putting all my chips in preflop with A2-A9. Suits does not matter.

Getting down to 8-15 BB's, I've been shoving with any Ace and that is just plain bad. I know that there is a place to do that, but I have been caught too many times lately and have to stop doing it. So until I can figure out the optimal +EV times to do it, my new rule is: NONE TIMES.

That's right. NONE TIMES will I put all my chips in with A2-A9 preflop. So if I shove preflop on you and you are holding A10, you are holding the MINIMUM hand I will have.

Save the date: SATURDAY, FEB 27th, 2010

It's that time of year again. I will be running my annual Figgtree Charity Poker Tournament to raise money for colon cancer patients. This will be our 3rd year. Last year we had $4,000 in donated prizes and we were able to raise just over $5,000 all which went directly to cancer patients. Thank you to those that helped last year.

If you would like to play, set the date on your calendar.

If you would like to donate, please contact me (broncohawk7 at yahoo dot com). Every little bit helps. Every single prize that the poker players win is donated. We get donations from cash to poker chip sets to power tools to fulltilt poker cash to poker books to anything poker. Any donation helps. I appreciate your consideration.

Can you fold KK?

Can you fold KK here? I think everyone would agree you cannot fold KK preflop. I've heard some people say they would on the bubble of a big tournament, but let's assume you would never fold it preflop.

I pick up KK in the cutoff and raise 3x BB. I have about 3500 in chips and am just a hair below average in a pretty big MTT. Everyone folds to the BB who calls.

Flop comes Q105 rainbow. Villian here checks to me and I bet 2/3 pot. He comes over me all in with about 300 more chips than me, so covering me.

Can you fold KK here? First thing I think of is Q10. 1010 or QQ or AA, and the villian would have reraised me preflop, right? AQ wouldn't shove, nor would 55. Now it is entirely possible he is on AJ or KJ, with the straight draw. AK probably would have shoved preflop or would have bet out to try and take the pot.

I just can't imagine any 0ther hand but Q10. I kept thinking it HAS to be Q10.

Yet, I cannot hit the fold button. Could you?

I called, he tabled Q10 and I went home.

Another winner

I decided to play 1 tournament and 1 only tonight. I had gotten 2 $26 tokens the night before for $8.80 buy ins. So $270 for $8.80 is a pretty damn good ROI!

180 player gold!

9th place in another 180 tournament (results above from www.officialpokerrankings.com). To be honest, this one was wearing me out. It was running longer than normal as everytime a short stack went all in, they would double up. It was brutal. At 4:30am, I was in need of going to sleep badly so I started playing more loose.

I called an all in from the UTG player when I was in the BB with Ac8c. To show you how bad a play that is, check out pokerstove.

I put UTG on top 15% of hands with a full table of 9 players. At least I know it was a bad play and only done because I was tired.

Another winning day

I love the 8.80 tournaments. Of the last 5 I have played in, I have 2 5th place finishes for $108 each and a 4th for $144. That's a pretty good ROI, I'd say.

I also hit a $33 rebuy for $172. I did an add on, so that was $106 profit. Overall, it was a great night for poker. I just wish I had more time I could play.

I've been watching videos off of PokerVT. Click the link above and check it out. I haven't watched any of Daniel's videos, but I'm enjoying Adam Junglen's stuff. It's just a good reminder of how to play online poker. I've been able to expand my starting hands in late position and tighten my starting hands in early position. And I'm getting better at understanding when to shove and when to call shoves.

I've also been using pokerstove to understand my equity against starting hand ranges. Try it and you will learn something. That's for sure. It's really been helping me.

Hope all is treating you well. Stay patient.....

Studying still paying off

Sucks to be so close that you can taste it and only get 30th. I'm gonna get another 4 figure score soon!

Twice in one week

Studying is paying off. I hit 5th out of 180 twice in one week. Actually, I should be disappointed, but I'll take it. I need to hit a big one again.

It's been just over 7 months since the last time I cashed for 4 figures in a tournament. It's time for me to do it again....

I'm BAAAAAAAAAACK!

Studying poker again and playing like it. I can't believe how quickly I had gotten off track of my play. I am not a great player, but when I am studying and really focusing on poker, I can play great.

Last night was my monthly tournament. 36 players with top 6 getting paid. It is a points based tournament, so you will make some decisions differently than you would in just a "top 6 get paid" type of tournament.

I finished 9th, which I felt was fantastic for the cards I got. I had 99 once, raised and won with a continuation bet. I had 22 twice and folded them preflop to open raises both times. I had AK once and raised UTG and won the blinds. I had AJsooted once and won with a continuation bet after the flop.

That's it. NO 1010+, NO Darvin Moon special (AQ), NO flopped sets, NO straights, NO flushes. NOTHING. I did not show a hand until the hand I went out on. I shoved all in at least 3 times with position and got no call.

So overall, I was pleased with my play. However, it only takes 1 mistake to take you out of a tourney. There's no reloading. So here's my question: Would you?

In middle position with $6000 in chips. Blinds are 500/1000 w/100 ante. I have 6xBB or about 2 1/2 M. UTG is the chip leader with about $30,000 in chips and limps. I shove with A5sooted.

Would you?

I think the limper was what screwed me up. If he doesn't limp there, I pick up enough chips to be able to raise a hand (unless I run into something). But I hadn't shown down a hand all night and was getting respect for my shoves, so I think I would have been good.

The limper was a sub player, so he doesn't know me and I didn't have a good read on him. I had not played with him but for about 3 hands at the final table.

Anyway, I know it was a bad shove, but I felt like I was losing the chance to have fold equity. And for points, I could have blinded out another 20 hands. It was definitely a mistake.

I was very happy to have gotten to 9th place. Look for me on FTP. I'm back!

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Fuck you ESPN. I may never watch another poker program on your network again.

This year I decided to not follow the final table live online (which I did last year). I set up my TiVo this year, got my work done, my dinner done, put the kids to bed and then sat down to watch a sporting event as ESPN wanted it to be.

At first, I was enjoying it. Even though it felt rushed.

But then, I would see Ivey's chip updates move without seeing the hands. And then it got more rushed and more rushed and suddenly i was not enjoying it.

I was feeling like they got me here, but now they didn't care what they did for me because I was locked in.

But then the panic set in. "wait a minute. 5 people left with 15 minutes left in TiVo land. There must be some huge hands to get through all this."

10 minutes left with 4 people?

2 minutes left with 3?

The short stack can't win this next hand, there is less than 30 seconds left.

And then it was gone. .....
TiVo asked me: would you like to delete this recording? ESPN ran over TiVo time. How could they do that in a PRERECORDED EVENT?!?!?

3 people left and I could watch no more.

Nothing I could do. I avoided the Internet for two days prior. I warned coworkers: "don't dare tell me who won!" I warned my wife which websites might tip her off and she avoided finding out also.

But it was all a waste as now I need to log into my laptop to find out who won. A WASTE!

I don't even want to watch the final 3 duke it out on ESPN. Oh wait, I can't anyway!!!!! Fuckers!

Well now I will do what I should have done from the start. I'll find who did the real hand histories and summaries and download and enjoy more thorough coverage. The coverage a true poker fan really needs. Not that bullshit that ESPN put on the air tonight.

I hope you didn't wait to find out like I did. I certainly won't watch next year.

P.S. If you know where I could watch the hand by hand summary I would appreciate your comments. Thank you in advance.

Disgruntled poker fan.

Brandon Spikes should be out for the season

Did you see this? How do you not kick this guy off the team? Watch #51 try to hurt the ball carrier by shoving his fingers into his eyes. . .

His coach suspended him for one half of a game.

Friday, October 23, 2009

My online play has been terrible lately. I don't know if I have been playing worse or if it's just variance or both. Probably both.

I haven't had much time to study poker lately. So I have just been playing. And really, to be good you have to focus in and study while playing.

Here's my graph of the last 500 games I have played. Notice the big downswing lately.

I'm sure it will turnaround soon.
Little League Football is over and I will be able to start focusing on poker again. I loved every minute of coaching, but it was a considerable drain on my time and energy. We finished 3-4. We were expected to lose every game, since we had all the "second stringers" to the other 3rd grade team, so I was proud of my kids to win 3 games. The other 3rd grade team finished 6-1. Good luck to them in the playoffs.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Finally did something in my monthly tournament. It is the 5th of 13 so I still have time, but I finally made the final table. I was hitting cards last night. Bummer was that I didn't get paid off on them.

At my first table I hit a set of Kings, two pair with AK, a nut flush on the turn, and a set of 2's. Not once did I show down. Every single time, I won with a bet. I have felt like everyone calls no matter what I bet over the last 4 tournaments, but last night was the opposite. I never had to show anything.

I ended up going out 7th with A2 sooooooooooted, when I shoved into AKoff. I had maybe 3 big blinds at the time and was getting killed by ante's.

Hawkette finished 6th. She is now in 1st place. <------ check that. YES. She is in 1st place out of 36 people. Taking it to the dudes! After 5 tournaments, she has more points than anyone else. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Way to go honey!

I even made money in the cash game afterwards. It was a very good night for me indeed.

Hope the tables are treating you right.

Life Update

Little League Football: Our 2nd game was rained out. Bummer too, because we were ready to play. It was a team we could definitely beat and we were coming off of great momentum from the week before. Our 3rd game was against one of the top 3 teams (out of 18) in our league. They have been playing together for 3 years and have some of the best talent in our pool of kids.

I thought we could compete with them, but they killed us 50-0. They scored 7 touchdowns. We had 7 tackles in the game. That's about it. I will say the cold and rain didn't help. I had kids that were saying they wanted to go home as the game started because it was raining so hard. They looked like deer in the headlights at halftime, because they were cold, wet, and getting beat like drums. We did have a few kids that played fantastic, so we made sure to point that out to everyone else.

Next game is this Sunday at noon. We play a team that we should be able to beat. We have 17 first year players so we are expected to lose every game, but I am confident we can beat most teams that aren't "select"teams.

I've somehow managed to go 2-1 now in each of my FFL's. I have Deangelo Williams in both and he really going to need to step it up. I have Clinton Portis in one and he is killing me... 0 TD's after 3 games... Blech... My nice gems have been Julius Jones and the Broncos defense. Of course, I didn't draft the Broncos, I picked them up after week 2, but they are my top points average with 20.0 points per week. Crazy.

I leave in a week for Key West. I've never been there but my company is taking me there for 4 days. I'm sure it will be fun. It will just be nice to have a break from everything for a few days. Any poker rooms down there???? Maybe I'll have to take my laptop. A little FTP on the balcony watching the sunset anyone? Sucks that I'll have to miss one of my little league games. Oh well...

Hope your doing well.

OK. So I played it down to 4 people left. But that was it. It was 2:35am and I had to be up at 6:30am. I finally set the computer aside and went to bed. I checked in the morning and I managed to outlast 1 of the knuckleheads left. It went until 3:15am. I would have liked to stay up for another 45 minutest to have that shot at $300+ but.... I got a little sleep.

Buckin' Horse

I changed my mind. I want to go to bed now. . . There is at least 1 hour left, maybe 2, but I can't play anymore. I have a big day at work tomorrow and a big evening planned at a charity event and I am already looking at a max of 5 hours of sleep.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh. I wish I could pause time.

This was funny though. A bluff gone awry:

Dealer: Keith Sexton shows Jack Ten high
Dealer: Ponzi_Ponzi shows Queen Jack high
Dealer: Ponzi_Ponzi wins the pot (13,200) with Queen Jack high
Dealer: Hand #14878313459
Dealer: Ponzi_Ponzi has 15 seconds left to act
Ponzi_Ponzi: nh donk
Keith Sexton: blow me

Smooth Criminal

I feel like superman right now. Everything is going right. I can't do anything wrong. If there were ever kryptonite in my pants, I would believe it was now.

I mean, I have been in so much pain for the last 3 days. And I don't have any idea why. Tonight it is suddenly gone. Just vanished. It hurt in the back and the front. But now it's gone. I must be doing something right.

It seems like anything that goes on, goes my way. Or anything that matters goes my way. I am still susceptible to the FullTilt RNG but hey... who isn't?

Can my life really be this good? I have had failed businesses, failed relationships, just about everything you can imagine. But now I finally am living the dream. I hope I don't wake up if this is just a dream....

Solsbury Hill

Does anyone else get great flashbacks from college when listening to this song?

So my poker has a been a bit off lately. I've noticed when I'm not playing on a regular basis, I start getting less patient. I'll go all in on a draw or raise on a bluff and then fire 2 or 3 air bullets. I know that is a move you can make but i forget that I have to be really certain when to fire with air 3 streets in a row.

I've been trying to play more online to practice for my live play. Just to get more patient is most important. Hard to believe playing online? True. Just have to keep working on it.

Congratulations to Scott and Brittany on the birth of their first son: SUTTON. Scott must be super excited because he is going to miss poker on Saturday because of it. Hope you guys are having fun. I know you are.

I have my second game as a head coach coming up Sunday. . . . The kids (8 year olds) were so awesome in practice on Thursday night. It makes me feel like the pressure is on me. I mean, if they are going to play great then the pressure comes down to the offensive play calling. What am I saying???? They are 8.... GEEEEEZ. Still, I want to call the perfect game.

I hope your weekend is great!

Stay patient...

When is the last time you heard that song? I am rediscovering songs from my youth with my I-Phone (I-tunes). Some of these songs I haven't heard in 20 years+. It's interesting the feelings that a song can bring up in you. How it triggers memories.

I'm on such a roll right now. Everything is going great! I hope you are too.

Stay patient...

Best WEEK EVER?

Thursday, my company promoted me to Vice President of Sales. While the short term will not make a huge difference in my role with the company, the long term implications are tremendous. I am to work on developing our sales staff in new markets.

I've seen other companies in our industry grow in the past, and if we even could do a fraction of that growth over the next 5 years, then I am in great shape! In any case, it positions me very favorably in the top company in the Saint Louis market. I am extremely excited.

And then Saturday I had my first game as a head coach in little league football (8 year olds). I have coached several teams over the years, but never have I been the one who was in charge. So Friday night I prepared my initial plays script (I am the offensive coordinator <----that's a good play on words there, eh?), then Saturday I waited for our 3pm game. About an hour before leaving for the fields, I felt like I was going to throw up from the nervous anticipation.

I prepared the kids the best I could and then took the field to see what we could do. We WON 28-0!!!!! WOO HOO. BOOOOOOOM. WEEEEEE. It was AWESOME! I, of course, couldn't let the kids see me jump up and down like we won the super bowl, but that's how I felt inside to win my first game ever as a head coach. Instead, I reminded them that we will play 6 more times this year and that I would measure how proud I am of them by their efforts on the field and not the score. And I told them how proud of them I was that day. That I know they gave me their hardest efforts and it's just icing on the cake to add in the win.

Of course this is not my best week ever, nor do I think I could define 1 week as the best. After all, at age 41, I've seen a hell of a lot of weeks. But it is definitely in my top 10. I hope you are still capable of having and enjoying a top 10 week.

I hope the tables are treating you right. Stay patient....

Play Roulette Online For Your Chance To Win Big!

You’ve probably heard stories of people getting their life savings, ‘betting it all on black’ and winning big. There was even a T.V. show made about one such rags to riches story.

If you’ve ever dreamed of following in those footsteps, why not try an online casino? While we wouldn’t advise anything quite as extreme as those examples, online roulette is a fun way to spend your online gaming time, and even small bets can sometimes turn into big prizes.

The advantage of online roulette is that you can play it anytime, and in some cases, anywhere – with online casinos offering downloadable clients, browser clients, and sometimes even clients you can use on your mobile phone. You could spin the roulette wheel while on the train home and cheer up your daily commute with the thought of a nice cash prize.

Often, the odds offered with online casino games are better than those offered at a normal casino – after all, online casinos have many more players, and lower overheads than a glitzy bricks and mortar casino, so when you do win, you can come out much better off. Playing Blackjack at an online casino is also very fun!

Great food, unexpected consequences

Hawkette made this wonderful appetizer. It was very simple. She cut whole jalapenos in half, scraped out the seeds, filled them with cream cheese and then wrapped them in bacon. We grilled them and they were fantastic!

However. Important lesson learned here. She de-seeded them with her bare hands. BAD IDEA! After "googling" her situation, she realized you are supposed to wear rubber gloves when working with the insides of hot peppers. Who knew?

Her hands were burning all night. She used ice water, lemon juice, and rubbing alcohol. Each helped but only lasted briefly and then the burning returned. Finally, she fell asleep, but she will never make that mistake again.

Good thing she didn't grab something she shouldn't have right after she gutted those peppers.

tough one to lose

I've been playing a lot more HORSE lately. Just enjoy it so much more than Texas Hold 'em.
This was a tough hand to lose. I couldn't figure out how I lost it at first thinking he had a straight.

We are 3 tournaments into our "wannabe" poker series and I am sucking. I went out around 32nd last night (out of 36). No excuses other than I played poorly. I bluffed off half of my chips when I read a calling station as having 2nd pair. He actually had top pair with a weak kicker. My bad. I don't know if I forgot how to play in these type of tournaments or what. But bluffing into a calling station that will never fold is just plain dumb.

I told my wife all about how to stay tight, be patient, and stay out of pots unless you are sure you have someone beat, and she is now in the top 3 after 3 tournaments. She is playing great; I am not...

Congrats to WillWonka for making the final table. He did great last night.

"There was one?"

What an incredibly awesome quote from a movie I haven't seen in probably over 10 years. Do you know it? The line before it is: "Son; There ain't no draft no more".

Anyway, I've been super swamped with fooball and life. I got home last night from football at 9pm and the whole house was dark. My wife and toddlers had already gone to sleep. I hate that. It sucks to leave for work early in the morning and get home after everyone is asleep. Maybe once in a while isn't bad, but 3 nights a week I do it now.

Of course, I volunteered so it's my own fault. Coaching is fun. I love watching these kids learn. It's fun to see how far they can go. Most of my kids have never played football; a lot of them have never even watched it. So to see them go out and run plays now, is awesome. I just hope we can be competitive on the field. We have 6 out of 22 kids that have played before and most of the other teams we play have the opposite ratio (6 new kids and 22 experienced). But we are progressing.

Tomorrow night is my 3rd "wannabe poker series" tournament. I fared better in the 2nd one lasting all the way until 12th. Hawkette finished 5th and is now ranked 8th on the leaderboard. It's a long season, so no worries here. Wish me luck.

Did anybody do any good on Fulltilt Poker this weekend? It seems a lot of people did. I increased my bankroll by 75%, I have a friend that hit a big tourney for 7K, and another that won almost $1200 in a $75 SNG. It's great to hear when people are doing good.

I just drafted for fantasy football. It was so bad, I'm not even sure I can post it on here for critique this year. I'm in two different leagues and it appears I will do poorly in both. But..... I made some great waiver wire moves last year and took FIRST PLACE in one, so who knows what will happen.

Hope the tables treat you right! Stay patient....

The Sickest Hand Ever

The debate about who the best poker player in history is can be a bit tiring. The ones who count bracelets claim that it must be Mr. Hellmuth, the ones who are keen on relentless aggression often give the title to Stu Ungar and all-round poker enthusiasts often have Chip Reese as their #1 player.

I’m not going to get into this debate, but I think it’s fair to say that Phil Ivey is up there among the best – his performance in this year’s WSOP didn’t exactly lower his value on the poker stock market.

To prove my point, just watch this hand. Many of you have probably seen it already. But it’s a poker classic that is worth seeing a countless number of times. In this hand, Ivey degrades us all to video poker players.

Heading into August

Wow! I have been busy. Here are some quick points:

-We started our monthly "wannabe poker series again". Last year I finished 2nd in points after 12 tournaments. I was the 4th person to go out in the first tournament this year. Not a strong start at all. The very 1st hand of the tournament, I limp in with 34 sooted. Flop comes 34J. A player that I know will fire with complete air bets the pot. I just smooth call, hoping to get another bet from him on the turn. We are heads up and the turn is an Ace. He fires another bet out the same size as the flop bet. I read this as weak, no Ace in his hand, so I smooth call again to see if I can get another bluff bet from him on the river. The river brings a 5 (no flush draws on the board). He bets out about 3/4 of the pot and I decide to only call, just in case he has a J5 in his hand. He flips over a K2 for a runner runner straight. I'm down to 2,000 in chips from a starting stack of 5000 on the first hand. I never really recovered and shoved with A10 only to be called by 88. I'll take that any day, having two overs, but in the end the snowmen held. Luckily, there are 11 more tournaments to go.

-Football season has started for me. I'm the head coach of my 8 year old's team. That means that 3 nights a week, I will go straight from work to practice and then get home at 9pm, just in time to tuck in my 3 and 4 year olds. I hate missing an entire evening with them, but I'm sure I'll be doing the same for them when they get into sports.

-Online poker has been poor for me. I will build up my bankroll a couple hundred then lose a couple hundred. Back and forth. I feel like I'm getting nickle and dimed by the juice. Poker is like a lot of things in that you have to get in a groove to keep it going good. You know what I mean. Your making good decisions, good reads, good laydowns. But, if you stop playing for a while, you start making poor choices or whatever; your just not in your groove. That's where I'm at now. I'm not playing enough to feel like I'm getting any better.

-My buddy Mike Eise is trying to go pro. He's the one that won a bracelet this year in the WSOP. Anyway, he found a sponsor and is going to play in some circuit events and WPT events. Good luck to him. I really hope he makes it. I still owe you a write up on everything building up to his bracelet win. Hopefully, I can get it done soon.

That's about it. Hope the tables are treating you right.... Stay patient.

still here....

What a busy last month it has been. Let's do a quick recap:
1)played in WSOP event
2)watched friend win bracelet which paid me $12,000
3)bought into 3 horses for the main event (1 out on day 1, 2 out on day 2)
3)bought new car (already was planned but now can buy a little more with bracelet money)
4)began preparing for football season (Head Coach of 8 year old team, also managing two football teams -fantasy football teams)

I have every evening and weekend planned until November. At least I won't get bored. I'm still planning a write up on everything leading up to Mikey's bracelet win.

I hope you are doing GREAT! I am having the time of my life!!!!

More to Mikey's story

This video story has Mike explain how when they were down to 3 handed he took out Ramirez. Ramirez at first thought he won the hand.

Also, the pictures are poor quality because they shot them off the back of my camera. I didn't realize it until halfway through the story, because I kept saying "the photogropher must have been standing right in front of me to take this picture", "and this one too", "and this one too?!?!?!. That's when I realized they took them from my camera which Mikey borrowed for the bracelet ceremony (we had to fly home earlier).

I plan to write up my whole version of this story, it's just been a whirlwind since it happened. Here's another interview with Mike:

Mikey wins it while we rail him all the way.....

From Laid Off To Paid Off In One Day: St. Louisan Mike Eise Wins World Series of Poker Bracelet And $639,000
By Tim McKernan
Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Mike Eise had never been to Las Vegas...and he wasn't planning on going anytime soon.

"I told myself that I wasn't going to go to Las Vegas until I was playing in a World Series of Poker event," Eise said by phone from Las Vegas last night.

He almost didn't get the chance to go to make the trip. Playing in his poker league in West County, Eise was fighting for his life in a heads-up showdown for the last spot on the trip that included a buy-in to World Series of Poker Event 28, a $1,500 No Limit Hold 'Em tournament.

Outstacked nearly 10 to 1, Eise battled back...and he won the final spot...and his first trip to Las Vegas.

The 30 year-old Fort Zumwalt North grad had to take a few days off from his job as a plumber in the Local 562 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. But, it was going to be all worth it to take his shot.

Eise had won tournaments locally before...but had never won more than $1,900...and had never beaten more than a field of more than 100 people. His wins had come at VFW halls and the Knights of Columbus. Walking in the World Series of Poker room at the Rio was a slight upgrade, and the idea of outlasting more than 2,500 players was, at least in the eyes of an outsider, highly unlikely.

But, not to Eise.

"I found myself comfortable at a poker table. I wasn't nervous. I think in St. Louis we have some of the best poker players around, so I was really at ease."

And, it showed.

Within two days, Eise had gone from just happy to be in Las Vegas to leading a World Series of Poker event. Monday afternoon, when 27 players returned to the Rio, Eise found himself as the chip leader with 16 players remaining.

Eise described the feeling as surreal, but just hours earlier, he experienced a much different emotion. He received a phone call from St. Louis letting him know that he had been laid off.

Winning the tournament went from a nice little idea to a mission. Eise focused on Katie, his wife of 8 years, and their three daughters ages 4,7, and 8. And, he locked in, got aggressive, and outplayed everyone until he got down to the final three players.

Shortstacked and essentially on his poker deathbed, Eise had to move all-in with Ace9. He got called by chip leader Rico Ramirez who also had an Ace...but a lower kicker, and after the board gave Ramirez no help, Eise doubled up and stayed alive.

That allowed him to go from the edge of defeat to the lead on the very next hand. On the button, Eise was dealt 99. He raised. Ramirez called him with Jack4.

The flop came off King-Jack-Jack.

Ramirez checked.

That sent off a signal to Eise.

"He checked. I checked. I knew he was slowplaying. I thought I'd take my free card."

Good thing he did.

The next card to come off was a 9, and Eise had 9's full of Jacks for a full house. This time, Ramirez made his move, leading out with a big bet. Eise came over the top all-in, and Ramirez called.

Even though Eise had the best hand, Ramirez didn't realize it...and he began to celebrate. Eise had to explain to his opponent and his opponent's fans that his full house had Ramirez' three Jacks beat...and once that fun fact was comprehended, Eise found himself heads-up at a World Series of Poker final table with $639,000 and a bracelet on the line.

"It was surreal," Eise said.

After 30 minutes of heads-up play, Eise had a 3.5 to 1 chip lead on Jeff Chang. Holding 78, Eise moved all-in on a board of 363...and holding AceJack, Chang called. But, the turn came off with a 7, and when the river fired a blank, it was over.

The St. Louis plumber who had been laid off earlier in the day had just won $639,331.

"It's a lot of change. It gets me out of debt. It's definitely a life changer. I'm going to take my 3 girls to Disney Land."

Eise said he plans to play in the WSOP Main Event, which starts two weeks from Friday. But, he doesn't plan to leave his field of plumbing...even with the new found wealth and fame in the poker world.

"I'm a middle class guy. I'm going to handle my money wisely. You won't see me playing in high stakes games all of a sudden. But, I plan to play more tournaments. Right now, I'm 1 for 1."

And, 1 for 1 equals $639,000. Not a bad way to finish off a day when you lost your job.

WSOP Event #28

Las Vegas: Here I come.

I'm leaving tomorrow at 7am CST to play in my first WSOP event (I have played in a circuit event but not the main stretch leading up to the main event). I won my entry ($1500) through a 13 tournament series that also paid me over $1100 in profit on top of my buy ins.

Some things for me to remember:
1)Have fun -Steve Dannemann's line from when he went heads up with Joe Hachem
2)Be patient -longer blinds than I have EVER played in. No reason to bust early on an overpair.
3)Be confident -I have a decent track record playing NLHE. Don't be afraid to bust out if I lose to a draw. I can't play too tight.
4)Have fun -oh yeah, that's an important one. I won a satellite to get in, so I am freerolling. Let's have a good time.

If you are around, feel free to say hi. I'm playing event #28 this Saturday. There are 3 other people going with me to play and at least 2 other people I know that will be playing. Hopefully, none will be at my starting table.

I'm going to try to hook up with this person and that person or maybe even this person at the Hooker Bar. Post a comment if you think you will be there too. Good Luck to you in whatever you are playing.

Stay patient....

Live Play

In an effort to sharpen my skills, I've been playing live once a week. I leave for Vegas next Friday, so wanted to get some live sessions in against people I don't know. It may sound basic for some of you, but my live play really needed some help.

Anyway, last night was my 3rd session in as many weeks. I played a 20 min blinds $100 buy in. I felt I was playing really well. I got paid off on my big hands (I made sets, straights and flushes) and I folded some big hands at the right time (I folded KQ to AK on a KQA board). I ended up finishing 4th.

Here's my question for you. What do you do in this situation?

UTG (7,000)
Button (82,000)
SB Me (45,000)
BB (51,000)

5 spots get paid. 4th gets $281 and 3rd gets $500. 2nd and 1st are irrelevant here.

Blinds are 3500/7000 no antes. UTG is all in next hand by default. I pick up QQ. UTG folds and the button folds.

So what do you do? Do you shove? Do you fold for 3rd place? Do you min raise and fold to a shove?

?
?
?
?
?
?
?

I raised to $21,000 hoping to draw in the BB. I figure, if he wakes up with AA, AK or KK, so be it. Any other pocket pair and I will be the chip leader with 2nd place guaranteed (1st place guaranteed in my mind as the chip leader was NOT a strong player at all). I've seen him all in a couple of times with any Ace and I'm willing to race if he is on Ace rag. Best case I am the new chip leader, but I'm also happy adding $7,000 to my stack by just buying the blinds.

BB shoves over me and I insta call. He shows A10off suit and spikes his Ace on the river.....

So what would you have done?

Shorty was all in and out on the next hand. . .

super turbo madness

Pocket Kings with 16 players to go (45 player super turbo with 300 chips to start). UTG raises and I reraise all in. Get two callers. REALLY? Unfortunately, MATT has the same hand as me. We get hosed (him more than me, because he goes out).

But I'm out 2 hands later.... I liked the flop, but not the turn or river so much...

Great job CAL

My son Cal just missed going back to the State Championships this year. I'm extremely proud though, especially since he is only 7 months removed from ACL surgery. He lost a lot of strength from that but was still able to compete in Sectionals.

Next year he starts college on a Track scholarship, so hopefully he will build that strength back up to compete at even higher levels.

Playin' 'em all

I don't know if it is "congratulations" or "sorry to hear it" but TheCloserX5 has played every single BBT4 tournament (and he is the only person to do so). And he has actually PLAYED every single one. Not just registered and sat out to say he did it. I know for a fact he won't be missing any of the remaining events. Maybe he'll get some kind of recognition for it.

MUCK MUCK MUCK

I decided I need to get out and play more live poker (with strangers) to better prepare for my Vegas trip coming up. In case you haven't heard, I won a $1500 seat and travel money to play in the WSOP event #28 on June 13th.

So I head to our local casino for a $100 buy in tournament. 40 players sign up. But the structure is terrible. Check this out. You get 5000 chips (Tuesday nights only -all other nights are 3000) with 15 minute blinds. They went like this:
25/50
50/100
100/200
200/400
300/600

So you don't have a whole lot of time for play. You have to make some moves quickly. I start in seat 3. Dealer is seat 10. First thing I notice is lots of limping. Everyone is limping into pots every chance possible. I fold the first few hands (including my bb that misses the flop) trying to get a feel for the players. There is an older dude (about 80) playing every hand. He will call to the river with 2nd pair, any draw, TPWK, etc...

Hand 1: From the cutoff for the first time, I raise to 200 with J9 off to see if I can pick up some blinds. I totally missed the 2 limpers from seats 9 and 10 (hence why I need to play more live). SB calls, BB calls (older dude) and 2 limpers call. Flop comes 1023rainbow and I fold to a bet from the BB. I MUCK.

Hand 2: Still 25/50 and I check my BB with K6off making 5 players. Flop comes K63. I bet out 100, older dude calls, everyone else folds. Turn is a brick. I lead again with 300 this time and older dude insta calls. River is a 10 no flush or straights possible. I bet out 500, older dude raises me 500 and I call. He flips over K10 for the rivered bigger two pair. I MUCK.

Hand 3: 25/50. UTG makes it 175, 1 caller, then from MP I raise to 500 with JJ. Blinds fold, UTG and caller both call the 500. Flop comes Qs2c3c. Check, check to me and I fire out 700 into 1600 pot. UTG raises all in. He has me covered by about 3000. Other player folds. I MUCK.

Hand 4: 50/100. I limp from the SB after several limpers ahead with 5c7c. Flop comes 5A5. I lead out for 100. Older dude calls, everyone else folds. I'm praying he has an Ace. Turn is a 6 (no flush draw) and I lead for 300. Older dude insta calls. River is a 2. I can't imagine he was playing 34, but so what if he was. I try to think of what bet he will call. I bet 500 into about a 1300 pot and he folds. I know he calls with any Ace, so why couldn't he have it now? I MUCK.

Hand 5: I blind down not getting any hands at all. No AK, AQ or even higher than A9off. I get 55 once, and limp from UTG (mistake, I know), flop comes AK10 and I fold to a bet. I MUCK.

Hand 6: We are first hand after break, about 28 players left. Blinds are 300/600 and I am in SB. I have 1200 behind. The cutoff is a friend of mine (shimshady) I have known for almost 10 years and have played with him MANY MANY times. He limps. I know he will limp with ATC and try to outbet someone after the flop if he misses. If he has an Ace or King or even connected Q he will raise trying to take down the blinds. I look at Qh8h and shove. I maybe could have waited 10 more hands, but I figure if the BB doesn't wake up with an Ace, I can isolate to only me and shimshady as I know I am ahead of him preflop with Queen high. . . . The big blind calls my shove for 900 more as does shimshady. Flop comes 999 -check-check- 6 -check-check 4. no hearts. BB announces and shows Ace high, shimshady shows 10 high hand. I MUCK.

Never showed my cards 1 time. Total learning experience. Overall, I get a D- for my play this time. I will make some adjustments and try again next week.

How Lucky Am I?

If you read my Mookie Win Profile you'll remember I said I am "lucky". I'm lucky everywhere I go. And so again this weekend, it happened.

Here is my ticket to Dane Cook this past Friday night:

That's right! Section 108. Row GG. The very back of the entire stadium. There were literally 5 rows of seats worse than ours....

Well, several things aligned that made us get there early. We sat down (10 of us) almost 45 minutes before show time and a woman with a handful of tickets walked up to us immediately. "Would you folks like to move up closer to the stage?" Sure, I guess. What's the catch? "No catch, just do us a favor and don't get up after the show starts". COOL! Can do....

This is the new ticket we got:

Section B, ROW 1. That's right. First row. Front row. No one in front of you...

Here's a shot as soon as we got there:

Here's Dane when he came out:

He was hilarious:

My iphone takes angelic pictures too....

So don't forget... I am lucky. I'm good, but lucky too......
