Blues Win!
How did I get to be a Denver Broncos fan and a Saint Louis Blues fan. I lived in Denver until I was about 8 years old and I remember watching the orange and blue every Sunday with my dad. Then we moved to Saint Louis where the town was not too fond of their Saint Louis Cardinals. As a matter of fact, there was little excitement and lots of Bidwell Bashing. This town loved the Baseball Cardinals. Closely behind was the Hockey Blues, and then somewhere down after your favorite college and high school teams came the Football Cardinals.
So I never really got into the football team in Saint Louis and then suddenly in 1988, they left. So I went to the local sports bars on Sunday's to watch my old favorites: The Denver Broncos. And as I came into my early 20's (a critical time for developing pro sports alliances), I became a die hard Broncos fan.
Since Denver didn't have a baseball team or hockey team (that I remember) in the early 70's, I became a Saint Louis Baseball Cardinals fan and a Saint Louis Blues fan.
So that's why you will find me rooting for the Saint Louis Cardinals and Saint Louis Blues, but the Denver Broncos instead of the Saint Louis Rams.
GOOOOOOOOO BLUUUUUUUUUUUUES!!!!!!!!!!

Let's take a RIDE
I'm a Ferrari 360 Modena!
You've got it all. Power, passion, precision, and style. You're sensuous, exotic, and temperamental. Sure, you're expensive and high-maintenance, but you're worth it.

Rebuy anyone?
The second reason I love them is that there is so much extra prize money pumped in from the rebuys. So even if you finish the rebuy period with a below average chip stack, there is a lot more cash you are playing for with less players to beat for it. I will typically rebuy right away to maximize my doubling potential and then buy the add on.
Here are two I played simultaneously and ended up fairing well in both. I really hate missing that first place money though.
This one I finished 7th out of 205. I was really disappointed I did not finish higher, especially since I was chip leader for awhile when we were down to 2 tables. I did one rebuy as soon as the tournament started and 1 add on for a total of $93 dollars invested.

Here I finished 4th of 230 but since it was a lower buy in, it paid less than the 7th place finish above. I was never chip leader, so was pretty happy where I finished. I was dead tired though as this one finished around 6am my time. Luckily, I was already scheduled off for a vacation day. I did one rebuy and then the add on for a total of $15.50 invested. A much higher ROI, fore shore!
I'm starting to try to learn Omaha more. I have been playing Omaha for 10+ years and understand the game play and the differences from Texas Hold 'em, but I have never studied and don't understand the best starting hands, best hands after the flop, etc., like I know in Hold'em. Anyone with any shortcuts, I would greatly appreciate it. So far, I am finding that PL Omaha High is my favorite and it seems pretty easy to win.
I took a vacation day today and spent all day with Hawkette and all the little Hawks. It was a fantastic day. We did a whole lot of nothing but spent the entire day together. It was great. I highly recommend it if you ever find yourself too involved in the routines you have.

The end of season 1

But I also love seeing my family. It's hard to work 10 hours, then change clothes in the car, then coach football practice, then get home to find my daughter is already in bed. So I miss seeing her for a whole day. That day is a much smaller piece of my life than it is hers. And I hate days when she doesn't get to see me at all.
This year I coached 7 year olds and the fact that they ran organized plays at all, amazes me. These kids are playing "Star Wars" on the bench in between plays. They ask questions like "Which way do I run if I get the ball?" There were many, many "LOL" moments this year. I really had a blast. But I'm also glad it's time to put away my coaches "cleats" until next year.
We went 5-2. Only 2 opponents scored on us and both of those games we didn't score. Football at this age can be so lopsided.
Tonight is the first Tuesday night since July 22nd that I will go straight home. Now if I can only figure out how to get Bodog going on my laptop, I can get into the latest Bodog Blogger Tournament Series.
If you ever have a chance to coach any kids sports, I highly recommend it. . .

Poker has been kicking my ass lately! Well, really it has been about a week. Last Friday I went down big time, down Saturday, break even on Sunday and then another loss on Monday. Luckily, I think I have been making poor decisions, tilting easily, and losing patience at the worst times. That's easy to fix. Refocus and play my game.
I'll check back in in a day or so. Stay patient......

Weekend wrapup

I did finally win a $75 super turbo. Have you played these yet? You start with 300 chips and the blinds go up every 3 minutes. Tight play is rewarded. I have won one at every level I can think of ($169, $75, $30, $15 and $4), but it seemed to take forever to get a first place win at the $75 level.
I like them because they take 20 minutes or so to play and if you can double up early, you can basically fold to the money. Win 2 hands and you have a great shot of taking first place. There is really no poker skill necessary until you get 3 handed. And even then it is questionable if you will need any skill to win. The nice thing is to watch a bunch of people slapping chips around while you wait for a big hand to shove with.
I got creamed again in fantasy football this weekend. My survivor pick was Green Bay, but with a lot of people taking Detroit as a potential upset, I changed it just before kickoff to Seattle. They won't lose at home to the 49er's, right??? Wrong! I'm out in week 2. My ffl team is down by 23 points going into tonight and the only thing I need is 24 or more points by McNabb to win. I don't really see that happening against Dallas. Maybe, I'll get lucky and suckout....
And I finally broke down and bought the first season of LOST. Everyone says it is so good and I haven't seen 1 single episode. Hawkette and I plan on diving into that now that Big Brother is wrapping up. We do have Survivor starting up soon, but we are excited to see this "LOST" that everyone raves about.
Saturday night I saw Cheap Trick. They were fabulous as always. Best band I have ever seen live by far. This time, I had to pay $150 a ticket since they were billed with Heart and Journey. I saw Heart twice 20+ years ago and they were terrible both times. This time they were alright. Ann Wilson has such a great voice, so I really enjoyed that. Journey was "blah". The lead singer they have now, "sounds like" Steve Perry. But he's not Steve Perry. Journey was the first concert I ever went to and I loved Journey. This time, I wasn't impressed and left about half way through their set. I was really only there for Cheap Trick. I just wish they were the headliners...

Friday Night Lights (Final)
Why?
It was 3 weeks ago today, that Cal's team had a scrimmage to tune up for the start of the season. Cal was as healthy as he has been since the start of his Sophomore year, when he was the starting running back, starting safety and starting on all special teams for the Varsity team. Unfortunately, he broke his leg that year in the first game and missed the whole season.
Last year, some of you may remember the drama we went through as Cal was a third string running back only, but would consistently produce yards and touchdowns for the team when he did get in to play. At that time we felt the coach was playing favorites and we were getting the raw end of the deal.
Well this year, the head coach moved him to wide receiver and he earned the starting spot. I was not pleased and debated on calling the coach to ask why their star starter as a sophomore was now demoted to receiver as a senior. But I refrained. I figured that since I was not in practices, I would be blindly firing darts in the direction of the coach with no real ammunition other than to try to get my son back to being the star of the team: In other words, it was my personal agenda to see him at running back, so I let it go.
Cal worked hard at wide receiver and stated he was happy not to being playing running back. He was embracing his final season of High School Football with a positive attitude and looking forward to impressing some college scout enough to get a scholarship to play another year. He was also pushing hard to get a starting spot on the defense, even though he had not started a game on defense in 2 years.
During the scrimmage three weeks ago, Cal caught a pass over the middle and took a normal hit from the defensive back. But he felt a pop in his knee and limped off the field. There was swelling initially, but in a couple of days it went away, so he prepared for the first game of the season. The trainer told him it was probably a strained MCL, and a week or so off of it should heal it.
Monday after the scrimmage, the head coach called Cal in and told him he is going to start him on defense. Cal was thrilled. He was set to start at Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Kickoff team, and he was to be their kickoff returner. But his knee was still hurting, and by Friday, he knew he couldn't start. He dressed and played the end of the 3rd quarter and the 4th quarter on defense only. He made a couple of tackles and felt the knee held up well.
But the following week, the knee "popped" again in practice and he would be forced to sit out the entire 2nd game of the season. The trainer once again encouraged him to rest it to heal, and he would try to suit up for the 3rd game.
He tried to practice on Monday, but the knee "popped" on him again and this time the Trainer told him to go see a doctor. We went the next day and they set up an MRI. Today we got the results of the MRI: Torn ACL...... High School Football over. Cal had a great Freshman year, a frustrating Junior year, and now it is over.... What a change from what we expected at the start of his Sophomore year.
Oh well. He took it pretty well. "We've been through this before" he said. We will schedule his surgery in the next couple of weeks and then start rehab. He should be jogging in 6 weeks and fully rehabbed and ready for Track Season in 4 months. Then he tries to repeat earning a trip to State in the Open 200.
And so concludes Friday Night Lights (at lease for another 7 years, when my next son will enter high school).
This all pales in comparison to the people dealing with Hurrican Ike. Send your good thoughts and prayers to JJOK and any others you may know in Texas.
See you at the tables tonight....

Typical Day
My typical day:
6am -wake up, get myself ready and get kids ready (with hawkette's help)
7:30am -leave for work with kids. drive 45 minutes to their daycare which is right by my work.
8:30am -start work
5:00pm -Tues and Thurs -change clothes in car and race to make 6:00pm football practice. As an assistant coach, it's not critical if I am late, but I make it as long as no major traffic jams.
6:30pm -Mon, Wed -leave work. get home just in time to see my 2 and 3 year old for about an hour before they go to bed.
8:30pm -Mon, Wed -kids go to bed. I clean up a few things and settle in to play poker some time between 9-10pm
8:30pm -Tues and Thurs -I get home. 2 and 3 year old get kissed good night. kids go to bed. I clean up a few things and settle in to play poker some time between 9-10pm.
12am-2am -Depending on how poker goes, I go to sleep somewhere in here. If I am doing poorly, I will tend to keep playing "one more" until I can end on a cash (a positive note).
(Friday through Sunday is the non-stop parade of birthday parties, kids sports, family events, etc., but still leaves late nights free for poker).
So really, I would prefer to sleep a full 6 hours. And if I get online to play poker at 9:30pm that only leaves about 2 1/2 hours for a tournament. Not enough time for anything really decent. That's why I play a lot of single table and 2 table SNG's. The 90 player turbo tournaments finish in about 2 hours, but I hate the KnockOut format. I would rather see the prize money go into the winnings rather than get spread around throughout the tournament to people that might not even finish in the top 50%.
Of course, the nights I don't play poker I might be watching Big Brother 9, or doing a project around the house, or playing live poker, or maybe just catching up on my sleep.
Hope the tables are treating you right...
Stay patient.

I'm officially old today
I had a surprise party at the casino including a room so I could stay up playing poker all night. Every year it takes me longer to recuperate from "all-nighters". I had no idea she planned it. It was the best birthday party I have ever had!
I ended up down $60 playing $1/$3 NL. The big swing hand of the night was when I raised pre-flop with QQ, got one caller and the flop came 5K5. I bet a little over half the pot as first to act and the villian shoved all in. I just could not see calling without a King in my hand. He stated "I have a black 5 in my hand. I'll show you no matter what you decide to do". I did fold and he showed Q9 off suit for the complete bluff. That would have doubled me up from what I started with ($360). Oh well.
Hope the tables are treating you well. I'll probably be back online playing later this week.
Stay patient...

Live tournament time again
But I did want to discuss a couple of hands. I hit a set of 4's twice. The first time there was a 349 rainbow on the board. I checked and (super loose) player bet into me. I think it was about 1/2 the pot. I had him covered but not by much. Now here was my tough decision. I put him on two overcards. Do you call and hope he hits a top pair, or re-raise in case he has the straight draw and take him out of the hand right there or race him for your tournament life if he calls? That's question #1.
Question #2: Player under the gun (super-aggro) bets 2x BB and I was BB with 44. I called. Flop is KQ4 rainbow. I check, he checks. turn is an 8. Do you bet here or try to induce a bluff from the super-aggo that probably bets on 90% of the pots he is involved in? And if you bet, how much (I have him covered by a margin of about 2-1)?
Question #3: This is an easy one. 5 handed and you have 12K in chips. UTG player has 13K in chips and bets 4K into 1k/2k blinds. You are next to act with JJ. You are 4th in chips with 5th at about 5K in chips. What do you do? Raise all in? Call? Fold?
You can answer what you would do now and then comment on what you think about what I did.... Scroll down for results of the hands

Question 1 result: I called and then checked the turn 6. He checked behind. The river was a 5 completing the straight draw and I bet all in (dumb on my part). Anything I beat won't call, anything I will instacalls. But he folded and I won. It did disguise the fact that I slow played a set from the flop.
Qeustion 2 result: I checked the turn and so did the super aggro. River was a 3 and I bet 4K. He tanked hard and couldn't figure out how that card helped me so he called with Ace high.
Question 3 result: I said easy answer because looking back, I could have called the UTG raise putting him on several Ace or King combinations and try to see the pot. My read on him was any Ace. I actually raised all in, MP called with QQ and UTG called with AK. Flop produced an Ace and I went out 5th.
I'm still in first place overall after 3 tournaments, with the top person after 13 tournaments getting a Main Event buy in next year and travel expenses. Hope the tables are treating you good!
Stay patient....

Tag -you are it.
The Rules: Rules are posted at the beginning. At the end of the post, the player tags 5 people and posts their names. Then the player goes to each of the “named” people’s blogs and leaves a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. If you’ve been tagged, you do the same, letting the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer. They, in turn, answer the following questions.
- What was I doing 10 years ago: I was 3 years into a marriage that was just about to take a turn for the worst. We didn't fight at all the first 3 years. Not just a little, I mean NOT AT ALL. Then we went through 3 years of catch up where all the things I did wrong in the first 3 years were now handled as "you always do that and I hate it". Then why didn't you say so? "I thought you would change/grow up/morph/???". The kicker was when we had a blow up about me doing something wrong at a party 18 months prior. I might have done something wrong, but don't wait 18 months to bring it up. I couldn't freakin' remember the party, much less what I did there. And she didn't care much for kids (and I had 2 already and wanted more). That didn't work well with me. Anywho, I was divorced shortly after, and am sooooooo much happier today.
- What are 5 things on my to-do list today:
- Catch up on a couple of blogs.
- Get this post done that I have known about for about a week.
- Get enough work done to just be productive for the day
- Call my 7 year old after school to see how his first day in a new school district was.
- Go straight from work to a fantasy football draft, then rush home to try to get there before my wife falls asleep (so we can talk -right?)
- Snacks I enjoy: chocolate anything and beer
- Places I've lived: Colorado Springs, CO - Saint Louis, MO - Denver, CO - Lake Saint Louis, MO - Lakewood, CO - Wentzville, MO
- Things I would do if I were a billionaire: Start a company where kids can work at and learn to become adults. They could work around High School or College, Sports, Activities, Weekends. It is so hard for teenagers to find a job that they can work a few hours or only weekends or one day a week. And most of the jobs don't teach them much other than: don't grow up to work full time in a fast food restaurant. Then I would make sure my wife and kids were happy and I would coach kids sports full time (*and of course play lots of high limit poker. Just because I could).

Tight is right
So I tightened up last night, found I could hit the fold button a lot and cashed in 5 out of 8 tournaments I played. No big cashes, but I wasn't playing big tournaments. See below:

The two good nights, I played much tighter. Not quite a rock, but you get the idea. JJ not so OK. At least not on the bubble.
Hope the tables are treating you right.
Football season is kicking in, so there will be all kinds of fun happening soon. I am coaching my 7 year old's team (assisting). My 17 year old starts his senior year of high school. If you remember any of the Friday Night Lights posts I did, this year should be even more interesting. Cal was moved to wide receiver. He won't even play running back at all this year. . . Don't get me started!

taking another break?
Well now it has happened again. I am being promoted and am in charge of half of my company's sales force. It is definitely a good thing, but it will double the amount of people I am responsible for.
The nice thing is that I know after a couple of months, I will have everything running smoothly again and can get back to reading and blogging. In the meantime, I apologize if I don't comment on your blog often, it may just be that I'm embarrassed to post a comment 2 or 3 weeks after a topic of discussion.
In the meantime, good luck to everyone still in the WSOP. I got a small piece of LJ, but unfortunately, she busted out already. Go check out her blog here...

I'm not the one that just got buttfucked on national TV, Dwayne!
Cal finished 12th in state out of 15 total. He ran his worst race all year. Bummer for him, but still I am proud he made state. He ran the same heat with the kid who holds the state record for the 200meter (set last year), so I think he may have been a little starstruck.
Wednesday night poker. Sucks for me. In Mook Stayed in for awhile, but then ran KK into AQ. I had him covered so got another chance 2 hands later with A6 and the same player called me with KQ. Queen on the flop and I am done. Sucked!!!!
One more try in the next tourney. I get AA and decide to trap. It works perfectly as I get the one and only Mookie to call my all in from the turn with only 77. Sucker!!! Oh wait, 7 on the river and Mook takes me down.
Three hands all in and three times ahead and three losses. Oh well. I run goot!. Not as goot as Fuel55, but I run Goot!

Sleep results
The mean, or average, was 5.79. The only numbers that I omitted wereNow back to Jamyhawk: I am amazed at the number of hours. Under 6 hours of sleep for most people that are playing for fun or little extra cash. That seems crazy. We even had one with 3 hours a night? ? ? C'mon Riggs, that can't be healthy. And of course: congratulations to Smokkee who seems to be eating his cake and having it too. 9 hours of sleep a night. I don't even get 9 hours when catching up on the weekends.
the 9 the 8, however the 8 had a response as to when they were working,
so I used that response of 4.5. So the mean was 5.79. The median,
(the middle term of all the terms), was 6. The standard deviation was
.95. That means that from 5.79-.95 to 5.79+.95 approximately 68% of the data falls in there.
5.79-2(.95) to 5.79+2(.95) approximately 95% of the data falls there.
With the outliers of 9 and 8 hours, the avg becomes 6.17 hours and
changes everything else around a little bit more.
Hope everyone enjoyed the little survey. I'll try another one soon.
My son Cal qualified for State in the 200 meter open, as expected. Top 16 runners in the state go at it this Friday and Saturday. Run Cal Run.
Don't forget to check out these sites: WillWonka and his What Would You Do hands, and OhCaptain and 20 questions.
I'm too tired to post any more (4 1/2 hours last night for me).
Stay patient. . . or maybe I should say: Get some rest.

Proud Father post
Here is the copy from the paper:
Led by its short-distance relay teams, Holt had a productive afternoon. The Indians won gold medals in the 400 and 800 relays while Chris Campbell (400) and Cal Hawkins (200) also earned top individual finishes for Holt.
“It all clicked,” said Matt Allensworth, who runs the first leg of the 400 and 800 relays. “Our first two handoffs could’ve been smoother, but we kept it together, ran strong and smart.”
“I was really relaxed beforehand and usually I come into a race kind of tense and jittery,” said Hawkins following his individual win in the 200. “I focused on my form mostly. I’ve been working on it for like three years now and I feel like the hard work is starting to pay off.”
Hawkins raced against a quality competitor in Howell’s Brian Cobbs in both of his individual events. Hawkins finished second to Cobbs in the 100 but won the 200 over Cobbs by a hundredth of a second (22.64 to 22.65).
“It was all in the lean,” Holt coach Ed Jurotich said. “It was close. I didn’t know how they’d call it. I was pleased to see him get the nod.”
Proud Father Part II
My oldest son Brian just graduated from college. How impressive! It really can slip by as an accomplishment, but he worked hard for 4 years and now has that degree that no one can ever take away from him. Way to go Brian!

Right now I am listening to Buzzsaw on SIRIUS
I played a little 25maxNL, went up and then went down. Finished down $10 after 2 hours and had 8 frequent player points. Only 1,902 points to go. Broken down by hours at the 25max NL level, that should only be another 475 hours or 20 straight days of playing. Or since I only play about 10 hours a week, I should hit my bonus in April 2009. . . I guess I could step up a level or two to quicken my points. <---Is that proper English? Quicken? Oh well.
I didn't cash in anything I played last night. I had Toppairitis. You know: You raise with AQ and get one caller. Flop comes AJ4. You C-bet. Villian comes over you all in and you know he has to be on a draw. You call and he flips over AJ. I hate overplaying Top Pair, but then again, it sucks to try to control the pot size and then someone catches their river card on you and takes you out. I did that once last night with top pair. I let my opponent stay in by not betting enough and he hit his flush on the river with 36soooooted in his hand. PUKE!
Glad it's Friday. Playing live poker tomorrow night. It's a tournament I really should own. I know almost all the players and their playing style. But we shall see.
On the work front, I just completed my first full month with the new Branch. I am hiring two more people Monday and then another in a week. I will have 8 total people under me. The only relevance to why I am putting it down here is that I will have less time to post and read at work.
Hope the tables are treating you right.

Aaahoo, werewolves of London

What is the relevance of this first picture? It is the clothes hamper in my hallway. I'll tell you why I posted it in a minute.
I played several tourneys Friday night and it was a +Bankroll night for me. But I didn't make any major scores. 70/1290 in 28K guarantee, 7 of 549 in $3 KO, and 6 of 18 in a Tier 1 SNG. I managed to cash in 3 of the 6 tournaments I played in. All fun, but again, no major score.
I'm trying to make a lucko or an LJ type score. Maybe soon. Take a look at lucko's blog to get some good tips on MTT play. And check out Vinnay. I kept thinking of his "blind play" when I was playing. No. Not playing from the blinds, rather playing without looking at your cards. I didn't do it, but I tried to imagine how I would play the hand regardless of my cards. As he said: it "reminds you of the importance of image, and really makes you pay attention to what the rest of the table is doing". See his post here for more. I know it is online and there are no physical tells, but you can still read your opponents somewhat.
So here is why I posted that first picture. Just before going to bed, we always check on the babes to make sure everyone is still in their bed, needs to be covered, is sleeping, etc. Panic set in quickly when we couldn't find my 3 year old, and just before I was going to start searching outside of my house: my wife found him here-------->

In this picture, he was still sound asleep. He woke up briefly when we were getting him out and said he was hiding from the monsters in his room. He had a blanket, pillow and a book with him. How can you get mad at him for that?
Thanks to my iphone to always have a decent camera on me.
